🎄 A Holiday Story Inspired by Beaufort, NC (or “Big Cat,” as I call it in the Crystal Coast Series)

I knew I wanted to write a Christmas story set in the small coastal town I created, inspired by my love of Beaufort, North Carolina. I’ve always loved visiting in the winter — the quiet charm, the marshes, and the thought of finding an old farmhouse tucked along the Intracoastal Waterway. Like Terri, I’ve often dreamed of moving there, of finding a place filled with history and heart, a place that truly felt like home.

The attic scene in this story came straight from my childhood memories. Growing up, a friend lived in an old farmhouse with creaky wooden steps leading up to the attic. At the top sat a dusty wheelchair that gave me the creeps every time I saw it. That haunting image stayed with me and eventually became the inspiration for the attic where Terri discovers Nana’s diary and the love letters from her Vietnam soldier.

This story blends the magic of the holidays with the heartwarming memories of the past and the sweet moments of the present. I hope that, when you read it, you feel the same warmth and nostalgia I felt while writing it.
